Status of Residence “Medical Services” in Japan

June 20, 2023

Status of Residence “Medical Services” Explained:

Understanding the Status of Residence “Medical Services”:

The status of residence “Medical Services” encompasses occupations that require a Japanese medical license (occupational licensing) to legally practice in Japan. It includes professions such as physicians, dentists, pharmacists, public health nurses, birthing assistants, registered nurses, assistant nurses, dental hygienists, X-ray technicians for medical examinations, physical therapists, occupational therapists, eye specialists, clinical technicians, artificial limb technicians.

It’s important to note that dental technicians, licensed shiatsu masseurs, acupuncturists, moxibustion therapists, and judo therapists with these qualifications are not expected to work under the status of residence “Medical Services”.

Key Considerations to Note:

Handling of Clinical Training:

Clinical training conducted by foreign doctors or dentists in a clinical setting in a foreign country, with qualifications equivalent to those of a Japanese doctor or dentist, and with permission from the Japanese Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, does not fall under the status of residence “Medical Services”.

Categories and Required Documents:

If the applicant is a doctor or dentist, they will fall into Category 1. For other medical professions, they will be placed in Category 2. When applying for an extension of the period of stay, Category 2 applicants will need to submit a certificate of employment that certifies the nature of duties and remuneration or other equivalent documents from the organization to which the applicant belongs. Additionally, materials that provide an outline of the organization (hospital, clinic, etc.) where the applicant works will be required. Regardless of the category, when applying for an extension of the period of stay, the submission of tax payment and taxation certificates for the most recent year is necessary.
