Status of Residence “Official” Explained

Understanding Status of Residence “Official”

The Status of Residence “Official” encompasses activities conducted by individuals engaged in official duties on behalf of a foreign government or international organization, as duly sanctioned by the Japanese government. This category also includes family members residing within the same household as these individuals, excluding activities falling under the purview of the Status of Residence “Diplomat.” It is specifically applicable to those performing administrative or clerical tasks while accompanying high-ranking officials or senior staff members visiting Japan under the Status of Residence “Diplomat.”

The duration of stay for the Status of Residence “Official” is distinctly set at 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, 3 months, 30 days, or 15 days, unlike the Status of Residence “Diplomat,” which follows the period of diplomatic engagements.

Key Considerations to Keep in Mind

  • Not all holders of official passports are automatically eligible for an official visa (Status of Residence: Official). Individuals arriving in Japan for purposes other than official business, such as tourism, leisure, or transit, will be granted “Temporary Visitor” status (with periods of 15, 30, or 90 days).
  • Applicants seeking Status of Residence “Official” must provide either an oral statement or documentation issued by their respective foreign government or international organization, certifying their status and responsibilities. This documentation is a vital component of the visa application process.
  • When a family member of an individual holding Status of Residence “Official” also enters Japan and resides in the same household, they too may receive Status of Residence “Official.” However, if they intend to engage in remunerative activities, distinct permission must be sought for such part-time employment.
  • Should an individual wish to extend their stay in Japan after concluding their “Official” duties, they cannot do so under the Status of Residence “Official” and must apply for a change of Status of Residence based on the activities they intend to pursue during their continued stay in Japan.
