Status of Residence “Researcher” in Japan

June 29, 2023

Status of Residence “Researcher” Explained:

Understanding the Status of Residence “Researcher”:

The Status of Residence “Researcher” applies to individuals who engage in research work based on a contract with a public or private organization in Japan. As of the end of June 2022, there are approximately 1,300 foreign nationals staying in Japan under the Status of Residence “Researcher.” This number has remained around 1,000 people for the past several years.

Relationship with other statuses of residence:

a. Relevance to Status of Residence “Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services”:

In cases where institutions are not exclusively focused on research and directly invest in the work that aligns with the purpose of their activities, it is considered to fall under the category of Status of Residence “Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services.” For example, if you belong to a private canning company and engage in basic and creative research for product development over a long period, there is a high possibility that you will fall under the Status of Residence “Researcher.” However, for other work (excluding simple labor), you are more likely to fall under the “Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services” category.

b. Relevance to Status of Residence “Professor”:

If you conduct research at a Japanese university, equivalent institution, or technical school and receive remuneration (including scholarships or allowances exceeding the range of actual expenses), it falls under the Status of Residence “Professor.”

c. Relevance to Status of Residence “Cultural Activities”:

If you engage in research without remuneration (including scholarships or allowances within the range of actual expenses), it falls under the Status of Residence “Cultural Activities.”

Key Considerations to Note:

Categories and Required Documents:
There are different categories (1 to 4) based on the size of the organization, similar to the Status of Residence “Engineer/Specialist in humanities/International services.” Generally, the larger the organization, the simpler the required documents. For Category 3 or 4, in principle, the applicant is required to prepare materials that clarify their activities, academic and professional background, as well as materials that clarify the business activities of the organization and the most recent financial statements.
